“My child is a new walker and won’t walk in sneakers, but our daycare requires shoes to be worn. What can I do?!”

Answer: First, know that this is a safety thing and a rule in most daycares! I have two suggestions:

What Shoes to Wear in Daycare?

  1. If they’re only for indoor use, you could try something like a crib shoe or even a moccasin.

2. If they’re needed for both indoor and outdoor, my suggestion would be to go as lightweight as possible – something like a moccasin, or the shoes found in this shoe guide under “first walkers”.

Know that shoes can absolutely be an adjustment. If you’re able to start introducing them slowly at home, that would be ideal! I typically recommend trying to build tolerance slowly during REALLY motivating times – like if there are other children around, if they’re going to be going outside, etc. Times when they will be distracted and can get used to the change! Hope that helps!
