Helping Baby Walk Between Two Items
“Hi, my 10 month old will cruise, move from the floor into standing, and crawl rather than walk between items. Would you just let her explore or try something else?”
ANSWER - I would let her do her thing!
You can also try one of my favorite activities to help encourage trunk rotation, standing balance, letting go with one or both hands, and just starting to do more advanced transitions between surfaces in prep for first steps!
The key with this one is to put something really motivating on top of a chair. You will start with two chairs or surfaces close enough that they could literally just hold onto one with each hand to get from one to the other (aka no letting go required).
As that gets easier, you’re going to SLOWLY inch them apart. Much slower than you think! What’s more important is really pushing that trunk rotation & standing balance - the letting go and stepping will come, I promise!
As you inch them apart, all of those targeted areas are going to really be working, and eventually you’ll get that full let go with one hand, to letting go with both and stepping.
You can watch this in action here!
Hope this helps!
