What’s Up With The Baby Crunch?
“Why is my baby doing the crunch constantly all of a sudden?! Help!”
ANSWER- Around month 3 of life, we start to see hands come to the middle of the body, head control start to improve, starting to work on grabbing their knees - all of which show us that the front muscles on the body (flexors) are starting to work hard! This is ALSO the time when you may start to see that baby “crunch”.
Here’s Why:
When your child is in a semi-elevated position like a bouncer seat or boppy, those upper flexor muscles that are developing are way more active because they’re not working as hard against gravity - hence, it’s much easier for your little to crunch! In those early months, unfortunately, it *usually* does not mean they’re quite ready to sit, & it may be a sign that the bouncer seat might no longer be safe (check your specific one’s safety tag!).
BUT, it’s also really exciting because it means they’re working on the next milestones!
Here’s a tip that may help: Roll up a small receiving blanket or even a dishcloth & stick it under their bottom. it brings their pelvis into a better position to encourage hands to knees & feet, and activates the lower ab muscles.
While in this position, do some gentle guided hands over feet, opposite hands to feet, or even some rocking side to side. It stimulates their brain, gets those lower ab muscles working, and helps combat the baby crunch by letting them use all the flexor muscles together in unison - ie: working towards mastery of the back to belly roll!
Don’t forget about sidelying play & tummy time as well - and before you know it, your little one will be a rolling machine! Hope that helps!
